Every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end

Two years ago I got the bright idea to sell most of my possessions, leave Los Angeles and hit the road in a 31 foot RV with a motorcycle on the back. For the past 20 months, that Winnebago served me well – allowing me to experience small towns and explore seemingly untouched areas throughout the United States.

I originally planned on a 12 month road trip, but found that wasn’t nearly enough time. I was able to hit all four corners of the continental United States including Key West Florida at peak humidity (lesson learned) and even ventured up into Quebec City, Canada.

One of the best things about having a mobile home was the ability to connect with family members and old friends throughout the country and still sleep in my own bed every night. It’s no wonder that so many older, wiser people choose the RV lifestyle  - it’s really the best of both worlds – you get to have a consistent home, and on the outside the environment keeps changing. And you never have to mow the lawn.

A common question that I get is “Where was your favorite place in America?” – which unfortunately is impossible to answer. I couldn’t even put together a shortlist. From feeling secluded in the middle of a dry lake bed in Joshua Tree, California to parking (aka living) just off of Bourbon Street in New Orleans, my experiences varied quite a bit. After 25,000 miles of exploration in 20 months, most people think that I spent a lot of time driving. Actually, I would spend several days or even weeks in a single place, until I felt it was time to move on.

So that brings me to the topic of this post – the end of my first US road trip. Last month, I left the Winnebago in a storage facility in North Carolina, spent some time with my family in the North East and have now headed down to Buenos Aires, Argentina for the winter. I’ll most likely live here until the weather cools off in April and see where my travels take me next. I have some exciting adventures planned, including a cross-continental motorcycle trip to Chile in January.

Armed with my new iPhone 4S, you can catch snapshots from my life and travels on my mobile phone photography blog.

Have you ever considered the Pan American Highway?

  • Wil Fernandez

Hi Mingon! I considered it, but would prefer to do a trip like that in my RV – probably not very safe. If I’m going to do an extended road trip without the RV, it is going to be a transcontinental journey across Asia (2014?)
