Meeting the New Dogs at Rancho Pilar

Posted by: Wil Fernandez    Tags:      Posted date:  February 10, 2009  |  4 Comments

While I was in Baja California Sur this past December-January, I visited with Cuco and Pilar at Rancho Pilar to see their puppies, which I photographed last year. Pilar got the puppies after her long time companion, Chata, who I photographed in 2006, passed away.

Unfortunately, the unvaccinated replacement puppies died soon after I left last year and they had two new dogs greet me as I pulled up at their open-air homestead. One of the dogs, a very timid, tan mutt, had an eye infection. Luckily, I had some antibiotic ointment in my pack and was able to convince the little guy to let me help him out. When I returned a few days later, his eye cleared up and was re-opened, but the infection had left him blind in that eye.

They are so pretty. Thank goodness you had an antibiotic ointment with you; this little guy was lucky that you came along. People like you are making a difference in the lives of others less fortunate. Keep up the good work Wil.

    Hi There Wil

I agree with Janie, how fortunate that you came along. I am chronic about dogs, luv them to death and it just breaks my heart to see them suffer or know that they are unloved. You are definitely one of the good guys – we need more of you!

I have just returned home, after a 10 day stay at Rancho Pilar. I will be posting my pictures and stories soon. Pilar and Cuco are opening an art shop soon. It is very nice and right across from the sandbar.Pilar and Cuco showed me how to make pottery and Pilar custom made me the most beautiful natural earrings. They are opening there hostel soon and it looks great already. Also they have there dogs currently…and they were great companions at night on the beach. I also got a pair of Cuco’s famous tire sandals, my friend bought Cuco a bit of leather from Mongolia and Cuco made me sandals with the leather…Mongolia meets Mexico!!!!!!!! We went camping several times with them and we visited the candelaria and swam in the waterfall.
